Memoirs on a Year of Marriage

By Derek

Genesis 1:26-28

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

In the beginning of time God created man and woman, and He did so for the supreme purpose to display His image to all that would come through them within creation. The intimate affection, love, joy, peace, rest, fellowship, communion, and oneness within the Trinity (notice verse 26 “let Us make man in Our image) is the ultimate purpose of what the relationship between man and woman was designed for. Unfortunately, sin has tainted this reality, but regardless it is still the aim and purpose that has never change from its’ original design by our Creator.

This Sunday, January 24th, for my wife and me it will be our one year anniversary. I wanted to write this specifically as an encouragement for her and all that have helped us through this first year. It has been a very interesting ride and one that neither of us would have expected. God brought a trial in the form of an illness to me a few short months after we had wed which  left me basically incapacitated (to some extent) for many hours throughout each day. From March to December I was in bad shape, but since have become more functional and coherent. Two things that I can recall from the past year that have really lain on my heart:

  • Pam’s (my wife) Heart for Serving

My wife is a machine and absolutely incredible. I do not understand why God has chosen me for her, and how she possibly said yes when I asked, but I’m thankful that God told her to. Pam is a special woman that is disciplined and committed to what she has given her heart to. I noticed through our relationship she always wanted to improve in how she was as a girlfriend to me, and this has carried over into her desiring to want to be an excellent wife. Throughout the entire time she constantly took all of the responsibilities (especially on days when I was incoherent and unable to do much of anything) around the household upon herself while still working full time. Throughout all of this I do not recall bitterness or anger in the situation that she was in (fact being this was 2 months after marriage), and she also never neglected her own personal time with God’s word, prayer, and communion to take care of other things that needed to get done. The patience, diligence, perseverance, kindness, humility, love, and most of all servant heart was truly evidence of Jesus’ Spirit within her throughout all of this and the growth that took place has been unfathomable. As looked back I can only say praise God for Pamela Mei Lin Robinson, my wife, who without her I do not know how I would have made it through this season. I LOVE YOU! He placed her to serve in a physical way as I rely on Him which I’m tremendously thankful for.

  • Unity of My Local Church Body

Grace Bible Church of Tempe is where we have been attended for the past few years. It is more than just a building we go to on Sunday, but instead an organic living body consisting of followers of Jesus Christ that desire to honor Him as King, Lord, Savior, and their highest Treasure. Grace has helped shepherd Pam and myself throughout this past year. I was on medication after medication and some of which cause bizarre side effects and throughout all of this our elders, small group members, friends, and family were so diligent and steadfast in praying and just asking how we were doing. Everyone always asked if they could help serve by bring food or doing laundry, or any other manner possible. This was our first time ever witnessing how a local church body was supposed to function to honor God and serve His people first hand. Romans 8:28, “For we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those that love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” We have seen first hand how to serve, support, and pray for our local church and should duplicate that every chance we get! (Many others were diligent and supportive but our local church we were just able to observe physically, we appreciate and thank you all that have been so faithful and are still)

My words can not express the emotional roller-coaster that my heart and mind has been through for the past year while desiring to rest in the promises of who God is and trust in Him for who He declares He is. I know that I am far more fortunate than many and I have been reminded of that continuously. Praise be to God for His faithfulness and encouragement through Pam, my wife, His church, Grace Bible Church of Tempe, and countless others. The anguish and sorrow of the trial brought rejoicing in God’s goodness for all the comfort and rest in which He provided quickly and yet in His time. “Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever.” AMEN (Jude 24-25)

    Derek and Pam,

I wanted to send encouragement as well! Being a newlywed myself I can no doubt relate, in part, to the first year struggle and joy of marriage. Please know that I have no doubt of His grace on you both… Stay strong and enjoy the good days.

Sudip and I would love to hang out sometime. Truly. Dinner or dessert on a weekend.

    • Thank you for your sharing and we would definitely love to get together! =)

  1. Derek,

Congrats on your 1 year anniversary! 🙂
Praise God for His faithfulness, for GBC, and for you’re amazing wife!! You are truly blessed!!
As I went through a trial with my health last year, I too saw for the first time how a church body is really supposed to act, all for God’s glory. What a beautiful sight!!

    • Praise God and praise God for you and your husband as well. We are always encouraged by both of you guys heart for the body, the lost, but most of all each other through the Lord. It’s been a blessing to hear your testimonies and others testimonies about you both!

Congrats on your first year youngin’… I’ll be celebrating my 25th year of marriage in March and happily at that. If you THOUGHT, (which I doubt), that the 1st year was a struggle… just wait… you have more fun comin’ your way. 🙂

    • I trust that God has much more in store and that through more trials more joy and exulting in Him will hopefully come. Romans 8:16-17, “The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.”
