an Odds and Ends of Sorts

In place of the normal odds and ends (the news bored me this week), two random and unrelated things I’ve been kicking around my head this week, an internal odds and ends of Russ:

Proverbs 21:1, which says, “The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD;
he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases.”

lets ask God to do this in Obama and other world leaders for His glory and our good.

Second, C.J. Mahaney killed me with this on wenesday;

“people don’t have needs, they have masters…Who other than the true God is my God.”

    Russ – I think Mahaney’s statement is a false dichotomy. I understand that pastors like him are trying like crazy to disavow the “therapeutic gospel,” but they often do great damage to hurting people by erecting false dichotomies between “needs” and “masters.” Of course we all have masters, but we definitely have needs as well. We have need of God’s love. Is that not a need? We have need of God’s forgiveness and that of others. This too is a need. It bothers me when Christian leaders try to reduce us down to speaking some kind of alien language so that we can be “biblical.” Perhaps I need more context, but this seems overblown by Mahaney.

    • the context was a quote from david paulison who is with CCEF. In light of that you raise a great point, there are legitmate needs for each believer. I also agree that there is a fair amount of pastors pushing for a black and white, either or dichotomy to drive home points, which as you point out, is unhelpful.
